The newly renovated Flo skatepark is located on the outskirts of Nottingham city centre and immediately resonates an urban/street environment that compliments skate culture. From the street art splattered on the walls to the DIY style of the park, there is plenty to explore, and this is before you have started skating!
The Park itself caters to skaters of all tastes, incorporating both street and park, while also having a gnarly bowl that really got the juices pumping in the comp!
Skate Nottingham, a community development organisation, who run a variety of skateboarding events to encourage and engage with the community, hosted the event, which ran as a week-long festival of skateboarding related activities across the city.
The event ran from 12-8:30 with the competition for the under 16’s getting the wheels rolling, this consisted of around 25 skaters competing in street and park events, starting with heats, and leading into the finals. However, it was clear from the first 30 seconds that these kids were the real deal, with the street event providing the audience with everything from a 50:50 to a tray flip. The bowl event did not disappoint either, various technical tricks were on show, everything just seemed to get cleaner as time went on.
This ultimately set the scene for the over 16’s, which offered £600 in prize money to the top 3 skaters and showcased a crazy level of talent, attracting reputable names in the scene such as Kris Vile, Alex Hallford and Aaron Wilmot. Liberalis’ own Celcio Santos was also involved, appearing in his first ever skate jam, immediately getting into the groove. Kris Vile eventually came out as the winner of the jam, bringing an end to an action-packed day of skateboarding and putting Nottingham on the map for skaters around the country.
